A practical checklist for planning a transmog outfit
Build a clear item list, verify the uncertain pieces, and keep a record that remains useful when a plan changes.
Begin with the character and game version you actually intend to play. Write down the branch, the relevant version information, and the character context before choosing items. A plan for an unspecified character is easy to admire and difficult to finish, because restrictions and availability still need to be checked.
Choose one anchor piece. It might be a helm, chest, or shoulder item that defines the silhouette. Describe what you like about it in ordinary words: a strong outline, muted metal, a bright accent, or a simple shape. This makes it easier to choose complementary pieces without requiring every slot to come from the same set.
Create a slot-by-slot list outside the site. For each piece, record the item name, numerical item ID, intended slot, and the data version you consulted. Add a separate field for an appearance variant if you have verified one. Leave unknown values blank instead of filling them with a plausible guess. A catalog entry is a reference, not proof that an appearance is already in your collection.
Mark each piece with a practical status: already checked in game, needs an eligibility check, needs an acquisition check, or possible substitute. Keep those checks separate. Knowing where an item is listed does not establish that your character can use its appearance, and knowing that a look works does not tell you how to obtain it today.
Test the overall balance before committing to every detail. Look at the character from the front, side, and back. Check whether the main silhouette still works when a smaller slot changes. If a difficult piece contributes very little to the result, a simpler substitute may be a better use of your time. This is a visual planning choice, not a claim about item availability.
For any piece you still need, confirm the current source and requirements using evidence appropriate to your game version. Record when you checked. WoW Xmog's starter catalog preserves Blizzard API provenance, but its acquisition fields are deliberately unverified. The presence of an item in that catalog should not be read as a farming instruction.
Finish with a short final review: correct character, correct version, exact item references, unresolved checks, and a fallback for the most uncertain piece. Keep your checklist until you have tested the finished outfit in game. If you later submit it to the community, explain any substitutes or uncertainties in the description so another player can understand the plan without assuming every detail has been validated.
